Prima Princessa DVD Review and Giveaway
Written by valmg on July 29, 2008 – 11:19 pm
I gladly accepted when I was recently offered a chance to review the DVD Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake. Dancing is great fun and great exercise. I took tap and jazz lessons for a number of years and remember how much fun dancing could be. My youngest son loves to dance around when he watches Angelina Ballerina. Young children love to dance around and have fun, no matter if they are boy or girl.
Prima Princessa is a cute little animated fairy ballerina who is also your narrator. She explains the story of the Swan Lake Ballet to a group of young girls, as well as you of course. While Prima Princessa is narrating, viewers are treated to footage from the Paris Opera Ballet’s performance of Swan Lake. The performance is broken up into several chapters. At the end of each chapter there is a lesson demonstrating steps seen in Swan Lake. Each time a step is it is shown it is named and shown twice in a row. No more “can you rewind” or “how’d they do that” with this DVD. There is also footage of the young girls dancing and students of the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center practicing in between chapters.
At 40 minutes, this DVD is just the right length to hold a child’s interest. It does a great job of explaining the storyline of the ballet. I’ve never seen a performance of Swan Lake but have heard of it many times. Prima Princessa’s narration was excellent and allowed me to understand what the ballet was about. This is a terrific way to expose young children to the world of dance. I think it’d be neat if future editions of Prima Princessa presented other ballets.

Prima Princessa danced out of the minds of two fellow Jersey moms, Stephanie Troeller and Mary Kate Mellow. (Such cool people and cool stuff comes from Jersey!) If you’d like to see a clip from the DVD one is available on the Prima Princessa website. The DVD is available for purchase for $19.99 on Amazon.com. It can also be found at Capezio stores across the nation, the Lincoln Center Holiday Shop, the San Francisco Ballet Shop, select Learning Express toy stores and many other specialty stores.
The folks at Prima Princessa have been generous enough to offer one of the Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake DVDs to a winner of this giveaway. How perfect. Well, my favorite part is the music, of course. But the snapshot of the two sisters dancing in the yard in their tutus. I have two little girls (4 and 2) and they love dressing up and dancing. My four year old insists she is a Ballerina Princess Mermaid. Can you just picture a mermaid doing a Demi-Plie?
