Review of Paypal

Written by valmg on March 15, 2008 – 2:37 pm

I recently bought myself a laptop. I bought a MacBook Pro 17. I had to save money for a long time before I had enough for it. I argued with myself many times over whether or not I should buy it. After I had enough to buy, the model I wanted would go in and out of stock, causing me to second guess myself and look at smaller screens. Finally one day my Dad told me to sh*t or get off of the pot and I ordered it.

I purchased the laptop online from Apple and I paid with my Paypal debit card. Within minutes I had received email confirmation of my order. That’s one of my favorite things about the Paypal debit card, I get an email every time I spend money. An awesome feature for someone who occasionally forgets to write something down in a check register.

I had ordered my laptop at about 4:30am on a weekday, before going to work. During the course of the day I called my home voicemail to check my messages. I was surprised to find that Paypal had left me a voicemail at about 9am asking me to contact them about my recent order. Concerned, I called them right away.

When I called paypal back I got to a person within about one minute. Not bad considering how many companies don’t want to talk to it’s customers and have endless recording loops these days in order not to have to answer the phone. I was asked for my Paypal card number. I did not have my Paypal card with me. (If I don’t have it with me I can’t use it and spend the money, you see.) The rep asked me for a lot of information, only which after receiving was she willing to discuss the account. I didn’t mind the questions, I was glad she wanted to be sure she was talking to me when discussing my money. The reason Paypal had telephoned me was because they were holding up authorizing my order until they had confirmation from me that I had placed it myself. They were doing this because I’d never spent that much before and they wanted to be sure it was a legitimate order. I used to work in mail order for a computer retailer and I can tell you there are a lot of fraudulent orders placed every day for all sorts of things. There are also lots of companies that don’t catch fraudulent orders or don’t have a system in place to try and prevent fraudulent orders from being placed. I was impressed that Paypal was actively trying to protect people from being a victim of fraud.

I’m pleased with Paypal. The website is easy to navigate and easy to use. I like that I can get detailed reports of all of the activity on my account at any time. I know some people complain about their fees, but I don’t find them unreasonable. They are performing a service after all. Paypal is free to sign up for. Paypal allows both individuals and businesses to send and receive money using Paypal funds, online checks and credit cards. They have both free and paid solutions for implementing Paypal on a website.

Paypal is located at www.paypal.com
