Review of the Little Cakes From The Whimsical Bakehouse cookbook

Written by valmg on June 13, 2008 – 3:49 pm

Earlier this year I won a contest in which the prize was a copy of a new cookbook. After almost two months, an awol cookbook and a nationwide plea for help, I have finally received my prize. This is a review of the cookbook Little Cakes From The Whimsical Bakehouse by Kaye Hansen and Liv Hansen.

The two authors of this cookbook are mother and daughter and own a bakery in Westchester, New York. You can learn more about the authors on The Whimsical Bakehouse website. The cookbook contains 176 pages full of recipes for all sorts of desserts, cupcakes, muffins, cakes and treats. Have a glass of cold milk or your favorite coffee ready, because from the moment you see the cover you’ll be salivating over the mouth watering recipes inside. The introduction itself offers a lot of knowledge about baking, and following it there is a section chock full of tools, tips, suggestions, common ingredients, conversion charts and how to tutorials. After that, get ready for the recipes.

Each recipe contains a list of ingredients and states the amount of servings it makes. The instructions are fairly straightforward. Ingredients aren’t all contained in one list as with most recipes, but they are printed in a different color font so they’re easy to spot. Many of the recipes in this cookbook include a picture, so you’ll see what the final product is supposed to look like. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be amazed at the creations it is possible to make by following these recipes. And you’ll be hungry for sweets. One of the terrific things about the recipes is the creators have rated their level of difficulty with stars, so you’ll know how easy a recipe is before you make it just by looking at how many stars it’s rated with.

The cookbook is fun, easy to read and highly appealing visually. It contains lots of different colors and the font is a good size for easy reading. The pictures look terrific and really draw your attention. I’m no gourmet so I appreciated the fact that it was written in such a way even a baking novice like me who’d never cooked any desserts not from a box could understand. It’s hard for me to say which recipe looks the best and the most unique because they all look great. It’s probably the construction site, although the words bugs, beach, fruit basket and shark also quickly come to mind.

All of the recipes in Little Cakes From the Whimsical Bakehouse are made from scratch. I love this cookbook, partly because it’s full of amazing looking desserts and partly because it makes me want to bake. If you like to bake or if you’d like to try making some creative desserts, this cookbook is perfect for you. Little Cakes From The Whimsical Bakehouse is published by Clarkson Potter publishers and is priced to sell at $24.95.
