Scanalog review and giveaway
Written by valmg on February 19, 2009 – 11:20 pm

I don’t subscribe to any magazines but I do read them and flip through them all of the time. How do I do that if I don’t subscribe? I read a couple that a coworker brings into the office for us all to share after she’s finished with them. I also read them in doctor’s offices. But what happens when I see something in a magazine that I like? Maybe a recipe I’d like to try making. Maybe a great deal on cute checks. Maybe some good tips and ideas. Here’s what happens. If I’m at work I photocopy the page. If I’m in the doctor’s office I rip it out and stuff it in my pocket. After I have these papers I take them home and have no idea what to do with them so they end up tucked into cookbooks and cabinets and on my desk. When I want something, inevitably I never remember exactly where it is. It turns up when I’m not looking for it. Thanks to the Family Review Network, I learned there’s a better way.
Scanalog is a software that, when used with your existing scanner, becomes a magazine cataloging system. It allows you to organize, catalog and store your articles, pictures and documents pile. Scanalog comes with eleven master categories (Home Decorating, Gardening, Home Maintenance, Food & Wine, Travel, Antiques & Collectibles, Crafts, Parenting, Health & Beauty, Career, and My Spirit). The master categories have subcategories, some are already there and some are blank for you to customize. Scanalog also has a database where you can track books you’ve read and want to read, as well as items you want to buy form catalogs.
After receiving a guided tour of Scanalog I installed it myself. It was easy to install, requiring several clicks and a restart. After restarting, Scanalog found my Brother all in one immediately. When scanning an article, you’re first prompted for the source and title of the article. Then you can enter any information you might want to remember later in the notes field. A thumbnail image is then created from your scan. You are able to select the portion of the scan you want to use for the thumbnail. At this point, you’re finished with that scan. You can either scan more, or bring in images from your computer. When you’ve entered everything you’re ready to enjoy your software. To browse you just enter a keyword or category.
My favorite thing about Scanalog is that the catalog system is already built, pleasant to look at and easy to navigate. Even though the system is premade it’s flexible enough that the user can customize it to their needs through the use of subcategories. I love the recipes section, and the fact that I can use main ingredients as keywords. During a guided tour of Scanalog, Kim (the creator of Scanalog) suggested scanning product warranties, which I thought was an excellent idea because I never remember where most of them are.
Scanalog would be perfect for anyone that saves any printed documents, whether they be recipes from a cookbook, articles from a magazine, product warranties or pages from a catalog with items you want to buy. It would make the perfect engagement or housewarming gift. It’s also be a great gift for someone who enjoys cooking, being organized, is disorganized or has children.
The Scanalog system includes the software on CD-ROM, a printed SCANALOG user guide, the SCANTABS label system and a SCANALOG Mousepad. Each copy of the software also includes lifetime technical support. It works on Windows computers. Scanalog retails for $49.95 and is available for purchase online at www.scanalog.com.

I subscribe and get magazines that I never get around to or save because I love the articles and I end up with too many . I like that I can scan what I want to keep and mainly its decorating and recipes I want to keep. This would allow me to keep the magazines without the clutter.
Its funny that the Scanalog was started because of a magazine article that featured a patio and she didn’t know where it was to show her husband ,so he would know what she wanted the patio to look like. Awesome find!
Thanks

With Scanalog I’d be able to get rid of this horrid shoebox full of recipes I have in my kitchen that I’ve clipped over the years from newspapers and magazines. I love that you can then organize them by category with the software so you can easily find what you’re looking for (you mean no more sifting through the box, frantically scanning for the recipe you know is in there?).

I save a lot of my parenting magazines, so I have about 50 or so hiding under my bed. Just on that off chance that I’ll need info on an article I’ve read…So scanalog would really be needed so I can become more organized. Also I’d love to keep track of my son’s medical records as well as my husband’s military records

I would love to win scanalog. I have tons and tons of clippings recipes, articles just stacked up. I never get a chance to organize them. Scanalog will be get rid of all the loads of paper I have been holding onto for years. I really need space. What better way to put it all in you computer and get rid of all the paper. My son is still too young to draw but I know I will be one of those moms that find it hard to throw his artwork. I cannot even imagine what I will do with the increasing piles of his artwork then. Anyways thank you for having a awesome giveaway. thanks for the chance!

What I really love about this program is the fact that you can use it on older computers. Not all of us have a computer with XP.

Rick is always on me about recipes I see them I print them and then I leave them all over the kitchen. He then grumbles and throws them in one of my cupboards. So then when I got to cook I open this cupboard and they fall on my head! Yup you can say I was a little excited to check out this software to see it may help I HUGE battle in my house :).

I think it’s a great idea. I’m always ripping pages out of magazines thinking I’ll put them in a book so I can look back at them. This would be great to organize everything since I like parenting tips and recipies.
