Urban Legends Season One DVD review and giveaway
Written by valmg on April 10, 2009 – 7:19 pm

If you’re like me, and most other people that have email, you have friends that forward you stories and warnings of all sorts. Things with subject like “forward this and Microsoft will pay you” and stuff like that. I’ll usually get the same email from like ten people and then I don’t get it any more. For a few months, sometimes even a year. Then the story reappears again. By this point the stories have often become an urban legend and people just forward them without questioning them.

The Biography Channel has compiled a number of these stories and turned it into a television series. Each half hour episode contains three segments, each segment containing a different urban legend that is acted out. I’d heard a couple of the stories, like the one where the man wakes up and his kidney’s been stolen, but most of the stories were new to me. There are also mini myths (sort of a question and answer) in between segments. At the end of the episode viewers are asked to decide which two stories were false, or which one was true.
Season One has been released onto DVD and we got a chance to watch it. What a blast! There are all sorts of stories in there including ones that were funny, creepy and weird. RB and I had a great time spending a lazy morning together trying to figure out which story was true, and then teasing each other if we were wrong. The show got some interesting conversation going between us as well, on other stories we’d heard.
The Urban Legends Season One DVD is a two disc set that retails for $29.95. The set includes 45 mini myths and 15 episodes.
Disc One episodes include:
- It Seemed Like a Clever Idea
- When Animals Think
- What a Way to Go
- Mixed up in Crime
- Cheating Death
- No Excuses for Stupidity
- Fickle Finger of Fate
- Neighbors
Disc 2 episodes include
- The Stuff of Nightmares
- Good and Evil
- Mail Mix Ups
- Marriage and Affairs
- The Dark Side
- The Human Body
- Weird Woundings
The Urband Legends Season One DVD can be purchased online from The Biography Store and other retailers.

Ooooh - this sounds like a good one! Thanks for the chance! I think the legend about the lady who thought her brains got shot out before she realized she got hit in the head with a can of exploding biscuits is my urban legend of choice!

One Urban Legend I recall from growing up on Long Island was that Lake Ronkonkoma was haunted by an Indian princess and would drown a boy every year because she was supposed to elope with a warrior from another tribe, but he stood her up and now she takes her revenge on unsuspecting swimmers

I’ve always heard the urban legend about the midget hanging in the background of the wizard of oz. Supposedly, one of the disgruntled midgets hung themself back there while it was being filmed.

Two young ladies living together. One young lady went go out to the bar against her roommate’s wishes. Later on that night the roommate heard scratching at the door but chose not to investigate it. The following morning she went to door and open it finding her roommate that went out the night before lying on the ground dead. She had her arms chopped off and she was scratching the door with her teeth.

There was an urban legend going around a few years back that an autistic child took a penguin home from a nearby aquarium. I was disappointed when I found out it wasn’t true!

My MIL is constantly sending me urban legend emails. Some more recent ones were stickers tainted with meth being passed to school kids, flashing your lights at a car with their headlights off can get you shot as part as a gang initiation, needles tainted with hepatitis being attached to gas pump triggers so that you are stuck and infected and my favorite, nest of snakes being found in fast food ball pits.. I’ve started sending her back the link from snopes.com showing that it’s not true.

I’ve heard that if you are getting robbed at the ATM machine and you type your PIN in reverse it will dispatch the police. It’s not true, but it is kind of a good idea!

The urban legend that drives me insane is the one about how Swiffer is dangerous to house pets. That couldn’t be further from the truth, yet all of my friends keep sending me the bogus e-mails about it, just because I’m a dog person. UGH!

I heard that there was so chemical in a lot of products that was dangerous to my health (I forget the chemical’s name it was a long one). Anyway it turns out that the products had been reformulated ages ago and so were not longer a threat.
Thanks for the giveaway!
